The staff of Coldwater Consulting has performed numerous scientific and engineering studies throughout North America to analyse shoreline erosion problems and to develop appropriate remedies.
Management solutionsThese can have the least impact environmentally and are often the most affordable measures available. We have developed ship speed control measures in waterways to ensure that increased traffic results in no net increase in erosion. We have also undertaken large, system-wide studies where the combined influences of shipping, water levels, wind waves, and ice were assessed to facilitate the development of water level regulation plans.
Soft solutionsWhere shore protection is needed, the use of natural, environmentally friendly materials is often preferred. Our experience in this area includes the design and implementation of ‘soft’ solutions such as beach nourishment and dune restoration schemes.
Hard solutionsIn some cases, ‘hard’ shore protection such as armour stone is the appropriate solution. Coldwater Consulting has extensive experience in the design, testing, analysis and implementation of all types of coastal structures for open coasts, tidal inlets, lakes, rivers and waterways.
| From an environmental perspective, the best response to shoreline erosion is often retreat. Allow the shoreline to naturally erode and move infrastructure out of harm’s way. When shoreline erosion endangers valuable infrastructure, retreat is sometimes no longer an option. At Coldwater Consulting, our experience includes shoreline management planning, beach nourishment design, the design of both conventional and buried revetments as well as dune restoration. |
